Penny Power is an exciting part of the Pennsylvania Relief Sale. The
purpose of Penny Power is three-fold: to connect children with MCC's global programs; to encourage children while still young to begin sharing their allowance money; and to raise money to support MCC's work around the world. Click here to learn more about MCC's Penny Power program.
The Penny Power website contains resources for running a program in your area.
Bring your coins to the PA Relief Sale on April 4 & 5, 2008 to be counted and receipted. No wrapped coins please! They will have to be unwrapped to go through the coin counters at the sale.
You can also count the coins as a group and make out a check to "PA Relief Sale” designating “Penny Power” on the memo line. Send the check by April 5 to: Carl Litwiller, Treasurer 2619 Hazelwood Rd. Lancaster, PA 17601. You will receive your receipt in the mail.
Magnify or multiply your Penny Power collection through:
Matches
Ask an adult Sunday School class or the church at large or a local business to match what the children collect.
Placing Additional Containers
Ask a local business if you can set up a Penny Power collection display in a high-traffic area.
Competition
Establish a competition between two classes or between guys and gals. Compete to collect the most.
Add a twist by agreeing on a consequence for the group that loses the competition. Then give the losers a chance to “lessen their punishment” by raising additional funds.
Kauffman Mennonite Church (near Johnstown, PA) raised an additional $6,000 beyond their initial collection last year when their two pastors had to spend 42 hours on the church roof (one hour per $100 of the initial $4200 collection) because the men lost to the women in the coin collecting competition. They were allowed to subtract an hour from the 42 hours for each $100 raised (calling from cell phones) while on the roof.
Locating Special Coins
Find out if there are any old or rare coins or coin collections within your group that could be part of your collection. These coins can be auctioned at the Relief Sale and increase your total.
Seed Money
Hand out "seed money” (coins in seed packets), encouraging individuals to brainstorm their own ideas on how to make the "seed money” grow. One family put their seed money together and hosted a fun evening in their barn with entertainment, food, and a mini-auction.
